Ball State hires Phil Hoffman to lead Public Media Stations

Dr. Phil Hoffman has been named the Assistant Dean of Media/General Manager of Ball State Public Media, effective Jan. 10, 2022, Dr. Paaige Turner, dean of Ball State’s College of Communication, Information, and Media (CCIM), announced.

In this newly-created position, Dr. Hoffman will be responsible for implementing and assessing Ball State’s bold, expanded vision of media.

“We are excited for Phil to join our team as we continue to fulfill the University’s strategic mission of providing our students with a meaningful educational experience with unparalleled hands-on learning opportunities,” Dean Turner said.

“This position will provide the leadership for an innovative collaboration that will benefit Ball State students through more experience in writing, storytelling, social media, and video production—skills that are highly valued by employers and meet the information, entertainment, and inspirational storytelling needs of our community.”

Dr. Hoffman will oversee the University’s Public Media stations—Ball State PBS and Indiana Public Radio—and will leverage student media content producers and educational experiences to meet the increasing need for local news that represents the diversity of the community and the state. “Ball State University has a long history of being positioned for the future of communication and serving the community,” Dr. Hoffman said.

An educator and documentary filmmaker whose programs have earned nearly 30 Emmy® nominations, Dr. Hoffman brings with him decades of public media executive management experience, most recently at WUCF PBS & WUCF-FM at the University of Central Florida.
