WATCH AND DISCUSS AT FICKLE PEACH

Let’s talk about…CANCER

One out of every two men and one out of three women will get cancer in their lifetime. It’s something we need to talk about.

WIPB is presenting a special 40-minute free preview screening of CANCER: THE EMPEROR OF ALL MALADIES, which examines cancer with a cellular biologist’s precision, a historian’s perspective and a biographer’s passion. It is the most comprehensive documentary on a single disease ever made.

After we watch, we will discuss.

WHEN: 3-5 p.m. Sunday, March 15

WHERE: The Fickle Peach, Downtown Muncie

We will also be giving away a few copies of “Emperor of All Maladies: A Biography of Cancer,” by Siddhartha Mukherjee.

This is part of an ongoing series of Community Conversations, presented by WIPB-TV and IPR (Indiana Public Radio).

The three-part series CANCER: EMPEROR OF ALL MALADIES will air at 9 p.m. March 30, 31 and April 1.

PREVIOUS SCREENINGS

AmericanDenial(title)R.A.C.E. (Reconciliation Achieved through Community Engagement) Muncie and WIPB Public Television are presenting a free screening and discussion of the PBS Independent Lens film AMERICAN DENIAL.

WHEN: 6 – 7:30 p.m. Monday, March 2

WHERE: Roy C. Buley Community Center, 1111 N. Penn St.  (map)

MORE: www.pbs.org/independentlens

Follow the story of Swedish researcher Gunnar Myrdal whose landmark 1944 study, An American Dilemma, probed deep into the United States’ racial psyche. The film weaves a narrative that exposes some of the potential underlying causes of racial biases still rooted in America’s systems and institutions today.

AMERICAN DENIAL sheds light on the unconscious political and moral world of modern Americans, using archival footage, newsreels, nightly news reports, and rare southern home movies from the ‘30s and ‘40s, as well as research footage, websites, and YouTube films showing psychological testing of racial attitudes. Exploring “stop-and-frisk” practices, the incarceration crisis, and racially-patterned poverty, the film features a wide array of historians, psychologists, and sociologists who offer expert insight and share their own personal, unsettling stories. The result is a unique and provocative film that challenges our assumptions about who we are and what we really believe.

After the screening, stay for a discussion of the film.
