A flower-munching monster. A friendship between a breadstick and a slice of pizza. An ogre who yearns to be a fairy godmother. A sun-soaked vacation in Florida.

All are the subjects of award-winning stories written by young authors who haven’t even reached double-digits.

WIPB has announced the local winners of the 2015 PBS KIDS Writers Contest. More than 75 entries were received from local children and 12 winners were chosen for first place, second place and third place recognitions. Children not only wrote the stories, but created colorful illustrations as well.

The first place winners were “The Monster Garden” by 6-year-old Maddie Autry of Marion; “A Tale of Two Friends” by 7-year-old Jayden Phelps of Yorktown; “Pugsly’s Dream” by 8-year-old Aubrey Couch of Muncie, and “Five Days of Sanibel” by 9-year-old Jessica Littleford of Muncie.

These first place winners will advance to the national level of the contest.

Other winners:

SECOND PLACE – “Ten Reasons I Know God Loves Me” by Allison Burge, kindergarten, Muncie; “A Kids Guide to a New Neighborhood” by Nicholas Wiley, first grade, Muncie; “The Sensitive Hunter” by Molly Piazza, second grade, Muncie, and “Everyday Adventures” by Xyza Keller, third grade, Muncie.

THIRD PLACE – “Super Baby” by Ruth Sherck, first grade, Muncie; “Nature Poems” by Sophie Glueck, second grade, Muncie, and “Jacob’s Story Problems” by Jacob Wright, third grade, Farmland.

The winners and their families will celebrate during a reception May 14 at Minnetrista.
